Clematis and Roses as companion plants

Using clematis and roses together is almost as old as these plants themselves.  Choosing a clematis and rose combination is mostly a matter of identifying and coordinating bloom times.  For this reason you will want to avoid group 1 clematis.

Use a group 2 or 3 clematis.   Group 2 clematis can be pruned like a group 3, if needed,  with the expected loss of the early flowers.  This will expand your choices.

Using a color wheel is very helpful for coordinating colors.
