                 ~Sweet Woodruff~

A low mat of attractive, bright green leaves and sweetly fragrant flowers.  On sunny afternoons the foliage will emit the same fragrance as the flowers though not as strong. Very popular.

Bloom:  Starry white in April-May.  The smell is sweet and pleasant.

Habit:  4-8" tall and 12-18" wide in 1-2 years with reasonable care.  Spreads by underground runners and can spread indefinitely.  In areas with ample moisture and no other plant competition it will slowly take over.

Exposure:  Part to full shade.

Site:  Grow in rich, moist, well drained soil.

Spreading rate:  Moderate to fast.  Spreads by underground runners.

Uses:  Use as a border to pathways. Plant around hot tubs, gazebos, and decks,   where the sweet fragrance can be enjoyed. Works well in woodland settings as a groundcover.

Fertilizing:  Feed in early spring and again lightly in early fall.  Use a balanced fertilizer, preferably one containing a slow release nitrogen source.  Always follow the manufacturer's label recommendations when making any applications of fertilizer.  Be sure to rinse the fertilizer off the foliage.

Watering:  Regular summer water should be provided the first couple of years to ensure good plant establishment and to promote maximum growth.  After that, water as needed.

Pruning:  Can be pruned all the way down to the ground in winter.  Prune as you wish to control height and shape.

Foot traffic:  Not recommended for regular foot traffic.  Stems will break when stepped on, plant will regrow from underground.

Hardiness:  -40° to -30° F.
