~Blue Vinca~

  Evergreen groundcover has glossy green leaves on trailing stems.  Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.   This is a classic ground cover.  Beautiful as a ground cover or lawn substitute, in woodland gardens or hanging baskets.  Easy to grow.

Bloom: Large, showy, azure blue flowers in early spring and a lighter repeat bloom in late summer.

Habit: 4-6" tall.    Plant 12-24" apart for quick fill in.  

Exposure: Sun to shade.

Site:  Plant in average to moist, well drained soil.

Spreading rate:  Fast.  Spreads by above-ground runners.

Fertilizing: Feed in early spring and again lightly in early fall.  Use a balanced fertilizer, preferably one containing a slow release nitrogen source.  Always follow the manufacturer's label recommendations when making any applications of fertilizer.  Be sure to rinse the fertilizer off the foliage.

Watering:  Regular summer water should be provided the first couple of years to ensure good plant establishment and to promote maximum growth.  After that, water as needed. 

Pruning: Prune as necessary.  Vinca can be trimmed down to 3-4" tall with a lawn mower if needed during winter.  This will give you fresh new growth and a really nice looking planting with terrific bloom if done annually.

Foot traffic:  Tolerates light foot traffic.

Hardiness:  -30° to -20° F.
